Member Advisory Council Tour
On Wednesday, February 16, 2005 Steele-Waseca hosted a tour to Great River Energy in Elk River, Minnesota. The attendees were the Steele-Waseca Member Advisory Council, Guests of the Coop, twenty Northfield Advanced Placement Environmental Science Seniors, their instructor, Geri (Gary) Schlecht, and Northfield High School Councilor, Ms. Lee Thorson. Other schools attending were Waseca High School Science instructors Heidi Bonebrake and Jessica M. and Montgomery-Lonsdale Science instructor, Jeff Ballman. The whole tour fit right into the subject matter of the Northfield Seniors learning about renewable fuels to create energy. Our first stop was the NRG facility two miles south of Great River Energy, where garbage is delivered by local garbage haulers. At this site the paper, glass, metals, aluminums and other non-combustible material are all separated. From here the paper is then hauled to Great River Energy and burned in a 40 megawatt garbage burning power plant. We generate electricity from garbage and save thousands of tons of garbage from going to land fills. From here our group toured the Great River Head Quarters and saw the dispatch center where the power for over 1.2 million customers is managed. If you would like to see interesting sites about your Electrical Cooperative we have more mini-tours this year and the Coal Creek Tour in June.
